Khan happy to film in Malacca

MALACCA: Bollywood superstar Datuk Shah Rukh Khan is happy to be able keep his promise to shoot a movie here.

He is currently in Sungai Udang to shoot the sequel to his 2006 hit, Don.

He said he would spent several more days here with the 140 actors and crew members.

The movie, he said, was an action thriller in the same genre as the Bond movies.

“However, I play the villain but one which the women love,” he said after a luncheon with Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam yesterday.

The movie is set for worldwide release on Christmas Day.

Khan said filming for the RM48mil production would continue in Kuala Lumpur with the Petronas Twin Towers forming the backdrop for a sequence, adding that shooting would be completed in Langkawi.

The Bollywood heartthrob said he was also considering doing a romantic movie in Malacca.

“There are a lot of beautiful and romantic scenery in Malacca especially near the Malacca River,” he said.

Mohd Ali, who was accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Asmah Abdul Rahman, said the state was justified in conferring the Datukship title to the international superstar.

“He has helped promote Malacca and Malaysia through his movies,” he said.

Khan was conferred the Darjah Gemilang Seri Melaka which carries the title “Datuk” by Malacca Governor Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob in 2008.

RM250mil project tipped to attract growing Middle Eastern tourists

MALACCA: The RM250mil Arab City project - on reclaimed Pulau Melaka off the Bandar Hilir Coast - is tipped to become the country’s foremost attraction for the growing Middle East tourist market.

The Arab City will boast 240 lots offering products from the Arab world, including 10 restaurants specialising in authentic Middle Eastern cuisines and a museum with genuine Egyptian artifacts.

The Arabian extragavanza is expected to be completed in March next year.

“The Arab City will become a showcase of Arab culture for locals while offering Middle Eastern tourists a taste of home when visiting the country,” project developer Golden Corporate Heritages president Saleh Al Mansour said.

He added there was also intention to blend Arab and Malaysian culture as it was done here 600 years ago during the Malacca Sultanate Empire.

Saleh said many Arab tourists coming here wanted to see more of the country and not merely shop in Kuala Lumpur.

“When Arab tourists are in Kuala Lumpur, they get a big let down when they visit the Arab Street.

“It does not reflect our culture and they feel insulted at the representation. That is why we decided to develop the Arab City project here to promote authentic Arab culture,” he told reporters when met at the project site here on Sunday. Construction work was set to start next month with the recruitment for workers beginning in August.

Some 800 to 850 workers, representing 75% of our workforce, will be locals. The remaining will be Arab and Middle Eastern professionals brought in from 20 countries to train and supervise the workers,” he said.

Covering 1.8ha of seafront land, the Arab City represents the first of three projects worth RM1.2bil to be undertaken by Arab investors in Malacca over the next several years.

The other Golden Corporate Heritages projects in the pipeline here are a five-star hotel; exclusive chalets and private medical centre on 13.75ha of seafront land in Klebang and the Arab traders bazaar in Kampung Jawa.

Big traffic changes in Taman Melaka Raya

MALACCA: The state will make major changes to traffic routes in Taman Melaka Raya starting this month.

Vehicles coming in from the heart of the old city centre in Jalan Merdeka will have an alternative route to exit the city via Jalan Melaka Raya.

To accomplish this, the current one-way traffic in Jalan Melaka Raya will undergo reverse flow to ease congestion at the interchange leading to Jalan Parameswara.

Motorists can now head directly for Garden City, Bukit Senjuang, Ujong Pasir and Semabok before heading towards the highway.

Changes made: A bird eye view from Hotel Equatorial Melaka of the interchange connecting Jalan Merdeka, Jalan Melaka Raya and Jalan Parameswara.The 'island' will be removed to make way for motorists to enter Jalan Melaka Raya directly from Jalan Merdeka.

State Public Works and Utilities Committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo said there would be no trial period and the change would be permanent.

He said the number of vehicles entering the city had increased after its inscription as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

“There were 76,000 vehicles in the heart of the old city in the first three days of Chinese New Year,” he said.

Gan also urged contractors to complete the new RM12mil Kota Laksamana- Limbongan coastal highway ahead of the May deadline to alleviate congestion in the state’s commercial district.

He said, if successful, the road curbs between Dataran Pahlawan and Mahkota Parade would be scrapped to make room for a four-lane road.

Traffic police will be stationed at the interchange to manage the flow beginning for one week.

State Public Works Department and local council personnel will be on standby to assist.

Malacca a fairyland for tourists at night

MALACCA: Chinese New Year festivities here kicked off with the launch of an exhibition featuring 500 brightly-lit replicas of famous landmarks and animals.

The exhibition, held next to Malacca River, is among the state’s latest attractions for tourists.

One item that stands out is a 50m red dragon illuminated by 700 lights.

At its launch, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the dragon was crafted by artisans from China.

“The exhibition makes the Malacca River cruise more exciting, especially at night,” he said to reporters after touring the site.

Apart from the dragon, there are replicas of Porta De Santiago, Independence Memorial Museum, a traditional Malay wooden house, Eye on Malaysia, Menara Taming Sari and animals like rabbits, deer, birds, bees, butterflies and dogs and plants like the rose and hibiscus.

“We will add more replicas that represent Malacca and Malaysia,” said Mohd Ali.

He said the state spent RM1.8mil on the exhibition which will last for two months.

“We may extend the exhibition for up to a year, depending on the response,” he added.

Engineer Goh Jun Hao, 23, said the exhibition was great, especially the red dragon.

During the event, it showcased a spectacular 20-minute fireworks display witnessed be thousands.

CNY decor maker and wholesaler increases production by 10% due to good demand

MALACCA: The heat of the global economic slowdown does not seem to have any effect for An Yang Sdn Bhd in Cheng whose locally made Chinese New Year decorative items continue to remain popular.

Instead of seeing orders drop, the company, located in the Cheng Industrial Zone, had increased production by 10% following good demand for their items, in particular Chinese red lanterns.

Factory owner and wholesaler Wong Liang Fatt, 60, said he was confident that sales would remain brisk despite much talk about economic slowdown.

Quality items: Wong's younger brother, Liang Sing,55,showing some of the lanterns made at their factory sold at their retail outlet in Jalan Bunga Raya.

“For the Chinese community, Chinese New Year is a major event which is celebrated in a grand manner.

“Most families do not mind spending because it is a time for family reunion. The dinner on the eve of the New Year is an important gathering to usher in prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead,” he said in an interview.

Wong, who has been in the family business for more than 30 years, said the company sold more than 100,000 lanterns last year and he expected sales to improve this year. “We used to import the lanterns from several neighbouring countries.

“However, shortages and breakages owing to poor production quality prompted us to start producing our own lanterns eight years ago,” he said.

Besides lanterns, he said the company also produced other decorative items such as printed Chinese spring couplets and other non-seasonal items.

Extra special celebration awaits all

MALACCA: Christmas this year will be extra special for residents of the Portuguese Settlement who will host some 30,000 people at the national-level celebrations on Dec 27.
The residents of the 118 homes have been working feverishly to get their houses and village ready for the event.
Regedor (headman) Peter Thomas Gomes said that most of the homes have already put up Christmas trees and decorations and the entire village is expected to be lit up by today.

An open house will be held for visitors along Albuquerque Road from 4pm to 6pm before Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi launches the celebration at 8.30pm.
Resident Marina Danker, 42, a kindergarten teacher from Texiera Road, said her family began putting up decorations last week.
“I had to spend a little more this year as I had to change the Christmas lights which I bought two years ago,” she said, adding that she spent about RM400 on decorations and lights.
She said that residents were honoured to show the nation how the Portuguese community celebrated Christmas.

The Eye on Malaysia (EOM)is permanently placed at the Sungai Melaka river mouth, facing the Straits of Malacca.

Ticket price for Malaysians and foreigners would be different, and that Malaysian adults who produced MyKad would be charged RM10, RM8 for children above 12 and RM5 for children below 12.
Malaysian senior citizens and students from local private and public institutions of higher learning will be charged RM8. For foreigners, tickets are priced at RM20 (adults) and RM10 (children).

The wheel comprises 42 gondolas and allows visitors to experience a 360-degree panoramic view of the Historical City and the Straits of Malacca.

"We are expecting between 700,000 and 750,000 visitors to ride the EOM annually."

EOM Sdn Bhd (EOMSB) chief executive officer Adam Yong Abdullah said the company would build two other attractions at the Sungai Melaka river mouth.

"We plan to open the Light and Sound Water Screen at the Straits of Malacca in December and a Space Exhibition Centre in February."

The air-conditioned viewing cabin, which can accommodate up to 80 people at a time, revolves as it rises from ground level to the top of the tower. It also revolves on its downward journey.

Among the extra services offered are kiosks, a restaurant and limousine services.

Menara Taming Sari will be the first of its kind in the country with a revolving observation cabin, which provides a breathtaking 360-degree view of the entire historical areas in the city. Each viewing session would last seven minutes.

Shah Rukh finally in Malacca to receive his award

MALACCA: Bollywood superstar Datuk Shah Rukh Khan has agreed to assist the state in developing the local film industry including shooting one of his movies here later next year.

Shah Rukh said that a team from Mumbai, India, would visit Malacca some time between August and September next year to scout for possible locations for the movie.

“There is a flim I am planning some time in August and September and will send a team down to look around,” he told reporters Saturday at a press conference after receiving his Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM) from governor Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob at a ceremony held in Ayer Keroh.

He added that the tentative title for the proposed movie is “Happy New Year”.

On how he felt about his Datukship, the actor said that it was an honour not only for him but also for all actors from India.

“I am very happy that I have found a big space in the hearts of people here,” he added.

Earlier, some 500 specially invited guests attended Shah Rukh’s investiture ceremony held at Dewan Seri Negeri and waited patiently for more than an hour for the arrival of the superstar.

The actor arrived at about 11.15am.

The ceremony went on flawlessly and he was conferred his award from Mohd Khalil at noon.

The actor later toured several sites in the city including taking a cruise on the Malacca River and rides up the Taming Sari Tower and Eye on Malaysia including meeting fans at Dataran MBMB in Ayer Keroh before leaving for Mumbai.

MALACCA: Tourists in Malacca can now enjoy sailing on a luxury yacht and enjoy the experience of five-star dining at high seas.

The 76.62m Lili Marleen, owned by Halim Mazmin Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Halim Mohammad, can take on 50 visitors at a time.

“It's a floating hotel. Besides sailing, tourists can enjoy fine dining,” Halim told reporters after a visit by Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam on the yacht moored near Malacca Port here recently.

He said the yacht with sails bought in Germany would be used for social activities, adding that tourists would be taken to islands on the Straits of Malacca.

“We can also take tourists to Penang, Langkawi or Sumatra,” said Halim.

He said that tourists could liase with hotels and travel agents to arrange trips.

Asked about the rates, he said this would be discussed with players in the tourism industry.

Halim said the service was in line with Malacca’s recent listing as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

THE path towards World Heritage Site listing for George Town and Malacca was gruelling and at times controversial.

1. St Paul's Church located on top of St Paul's Hill.

The perseverance of the state governments of Malacca and Penang as well as the Federal Government paid off after 10 years when the two towns received approval to be listed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (Unesco) World Heritage List in Quebec, Canada, on Monday.

1. The Kapitan Keling Mosque.
2. The brightly lit Town Hall building at the Esplanade.
3. The Khoo Kongsi at Cannon Square.

1988 – Malaysia ratifies the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage 1972.

1997 – Then Culture, Arts and Tourism Ministry begins World Heritage Site initiative to get Malacca and George Town nominated as World Heritage Sites.

1998 – George Town and Malacca nominated into a waiting list by Unesco’s World Heritage Centre under two separate nomination dossiers.

2000 – Taman Negara Mulu and Taman Negara Kinabalu listed under World Heritage Sites under the natural heritage category.

2004 – Completed dossiers submitted to World Heritage Centre but rejected as they did not fulfil the format and were deemed incomplete.

2005 – The ministry improves on the dossier to suit requirements by agreeing to both applications under “serial nomination”, where both sites would be granted a joint World Heritage Site title.

2007 – Revised nomination dossiers officially submitted to World Heritage Centre in January. Unesco World Heritage Centre certifies submission as complete in March.

2008 – George Town and Malacca listed as World Heritage Sites.

What it means to be on the list

Joy as Malacca, George Town become cultural world heritage sites

MALACCA: Elation and relief were the reaction of people in the historic city and in George Town following the cities' joint inscription as Malaysia’s first cultural World Heritage Site.

Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, who is in Quebec, Canada for the 32nd World Heritage Committee session, described the success as "global recognition of the country’s ability to protect our unique heritage."

“I wish to thank the people of Malacca and all who have worked hard to achieve this. The inscription today bears the fruit of 8 years of planning and preparations,” he said in his SMS reply when asked to comment on the decision.

Besides being better able to preserve the state’s rich heritage, he said UNESCO recognition would also bring in economic benefit for the people through the tourism and service industries following expected increase in tourist arrivals.

Besides the recognition of Malacca and George Town, the Kinabalu National Park in Sabah and the Mulu National Parkin Sarawak were also inscribed as natural sites in the World Heritage List.

Malacca City Mayor Yusof Jantan, who is also in Quebec, said that the recognition would bring benefit for the state in terms of funding for conservation and preservation work including gaining foreign expert assistance in joint exchange programs.

As the secretariat for the state’s World Heritage Site effort, he said a permanent conservation and preservation unit would be immediately set up by the city council to oversee the implementation of UNESCO’s guidelines.

Malacca Heritage Trusts president Debbie Lee said that the inscription marked the beginning of a new phase in conservation and preservation work.

“The authorities must now ensure that the city’s intrinsic cultural heritage and monuments are protected and preserved through implementation and enforcement of proper policies and guidelines,” she added.

The 17th Century Cheng Hoon Teng Temple trustee member Josephine Chua said the state must now take steps to create greater awareness amongst the public on the importance of preserving the city’s rich cultural heritage.

“The continued recognition as a World Heritage Site is also dependent on the recipients ability to implement and enforce regulations. The tile can also be taken away if we jeopardise our heritage,” she added.

In GEORGE TOWN, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said a state-level heritage committee would be formed to formulate an integrated heritage policy.

Lim, who would head the committee, said it would hold discussions on fulfilling and complying with the parameters of a living heritage and cultural site.

“Penang needs not only an integrated policy, but one that has concrete short, medium and long-term aims.

“The state government will work closely with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the Federal Government and other stakeholders towards creating a plan that include mechanisms to implement the heritage policy and to focus on conservation efforts within the heritage zone,” he said.

He said the world heritage listing was often followed by an increase in heritage and historical tourism.

Lim said the state government recorded its appreciation to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) for listing George Town and Malacca as World Heritage Sites

Lim also expressed his gratitude to the previous Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister, NGOs, the previous state government and government officials from the state agencies who had helped George Town achieve the listing.

George Town, he said, has been recognised for its largest concentration of pre-World War II buildings in South East Asia and multi-ethnic living heritage.

“Malays, Indians, Chinese, Eurasians, Armenians, Japanese, British, Jewish, Filipinos and other small nationalities have contributed to the development of George Town,” he said.

State Local Government, Traffic Management and Environment Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the state government has great responsibility to protect and maintain the World Heritage Site status.

“Failing which, the Unesco will degrade us and strip us off the heritage city status,” he said.

I’m looking forward to working with Stanley Huang,” said Taiwanese singer Show Luo in a teleconference during the launch of the event. The 18th Taiwanese Golden Melody Awards Most Popular Male Singer was among the international artistes who performed at the first Summer Live Concert in 2005.

“I’ve never been to Malaysia before but I heard from my friends that there are lots of lovely girls there. I hope to meet some of them on stage,” said Taiwanese American singer-songwriter Stanley Huang in a videoconference at the launch.

988 FM is once again the official radio station for the event, which is organised by 8tv with Better Events and Productions. RM100,000 jetty for Malacca rivermouth

MALACCA: The Malacca government will build a RM100,000 temporary jetty at the mouth of Malacca River for tourists disembarking from cruise ships.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the jetty was necessary as Star Cruises ships had stopped making Malacca a stopover owing to the lack of a jetty for passengers to disembark.

“I was informed that Star Cruises has chosen to bypass Malacca and sail directly to Langkawi as of last month,” he told reporters during a visit to Malacca River recently.

He said the move meant the loss of 3,000 day-trippers from the ship who spent the afternoon sightseeing and shopping.

Besides this, a proper jetty was necessary owing to an influx of medical tourists who arrived by ferry from Sumatra, he said.

“I have received complaints that the present jetty does not cater to tourists and immigration officers treated those disembarking from ferries as Indonesian migrant workers,” he added.

To overcome this, he said the new jetty would have separate counters to deal with migrant workers and tourists.

Mohd Ali said the state would also carry out dredging at the river mouth once every two months rather than once in two years.

The present jetty was used as an exit and entry point by 92,000 people in the first five months of this year.

YTL Hotels opens its first classic hotel in historic Malacca

YTL Hotels has done it again. The group has now set its sights on transforming old buildings into fashionable boutique hotels, and their first such establishment, the Majestic Malacca, is already up and running.

The Majestic stands out in the historical city of Malacca but it is low-key enough that not many realise that the building is actually a hotel.

Luxurious furnishings: Oriental screens, lamp shades and printed curtains enhance the hotel’s posh dining area.

“I’d like the hotel to be the hot spot for corporate retreats, as well as for those in search of a memorable weekend experience. We aim to offer a higher class of luxury to travellers visiting Malacca,” says hotel manager Robert Hunter.

The history of the hotel is interesting.

It was initially home to a prominent businessman from China, who had the mansion built in 1929, then sold it to a friend in 1953.

This friend saw the commercial potential of the building and converted it into a lodging, the Hotel Majestic.

The hotel catered to budget travellers and travelling salespeople for a few decades, before it ran into financial difficulties and closed down. YTL bought the building and began restoration works together with Marble Valley Sdn Bhd in 2006. And now, what was formerly a humble hotel has been transformed into a chic and classy, 54-room boutique hotel.

“We tried to retain as much of the old building as much as possible and not tamper too much unless it couldn’t be salvaged.

“For example, the flooring has been retained but polished, and some of the missing flowered tiles have been replaced. The front desk is also original, and we redid the ceilings to re-duct the air-conditioners,” says Hunter.

The window shutters have also been retained, with only a new coat of paint to spruce them up. The one major change is the addition of an eight-storey new wing, which is where the rooms are located.

But gone are the days of simple bamboo furniture, and in their place are teak wood fittings and leather furniture.

Hunter says the hotel draws influences from the Portuguese, Dutch, British and Peranakan cultures so that its architectural style mirrors Malacca’s multi-faceted colonial past.

As you walk into the airy lobby, you’ll see old-fashioned little jars in the style of the old provision shops, filled with biscuits, wafers, peanuts and tidbits, which guests are welcome to raid whenever they feel like it. Immediately, one feels as if one has been transported back to grandpa’s house sometime in the 1970s.

Staff are friendly, constantly smiling. Small wonder then that YTL Hotels are always winning some international award or other.

The rooms exude an aura of romance, with a four-poster bed taking pride of place, decorated in a mixture of rich silks and cool cotton. And then there is the vintage four-legged pedestal bathtub and a huge showerhead in the bath.

As far as environment-friendly measures go, Hunter admits the hotel has not got many policies in place, as “it is difficult”.

“It’s our first classic hotel, and it’s not easy. For example, we have fans and air-conditioning in our rooms, and if the guests want to turn both on, we can’t do anything about it,” he shrugs.

The room doors also do not work on a key card system but uses the old-fashioned, slot-the-key-in-and-turn system. This means guests can choose to leave the air-conditioning on, open the windows and go off for the day.

Oh, well.

No visit to YTL’s hotel is complete without a spa treatment, since that is their signature award-winning feature, and so to the spa I go.

I must confess the experience is one of the best among YTL’s hotels. Not only is the therapist excellent, the entire Nyonya-Baba ambience also makes one feel at home.

The rich culture is reflected in the intricate traditional woodcarving and finely detailed porcelain wall tiles. Before you enter your treatment room, you are made to lie on a Chinese day bed and soak in the sunlight with a cup of Chinese tea.

I started off having the hair ritual.

Flat-screen TV monitors fitted to the ceiling allow you to watch black-and-white P. Ramlee movies as you recline on the chair. This is quite an innovation, although some guests prefer to just close their eyes and indulge in the hair wash rather than watch Saloma run around in her dark glasses.

Spa treatments are moulded according to the person’s energy, whether “cool” or “warm”, so you’d have to first take a short questionnaire.

If you’re a “cool energy” person, the therapists will recommend that you “balance” yourself with a Malacca palm sugar and honey scrub, hot nutmeg and rice-rolling body massage, as well as a bird’s nest and tapioca facial therapy.

A “warm energy” person, on the other hand, would be recom- mended a yoghurt and guava leaf scrub, egg-rolling massage, and a bird’s nest and star fruit facial therapy.

The three-hour treatment will leave you invigorated and longing for more. At the end of the session, the therapist sprinkles water on your face and rings little bells to wake you up. What a delight.

Nestled between the spa village and the glass-enclosed gymnasium is the all-blue swimming pool. There are also four meeting rooms equipped with wireless broadband and natural lighting via large windows.

Since the hotel’s location is just a stone’s throw away from famous Jonker Street, guests can indulge in the nightlife in the surrounding areas. Across the hotel is Villa Sentosa, the only Malay village in the heart of the city, and next to it is a hospital.

Dining is a lovely affair at the hotel’s restaurant, but for a wider selection of local specialities, you can always walk to the city centre and explore the many eateries there.

Small, comfortable, and ready to make its mark as a classy boutique hotel – that, in a nutshell, is The Majestic Malacca.

Ferris wheel gets a permanent home in Malacca

MALACCA: The state will be investing RM42mil in a joint-venture project for the construction of an integrated complex to permanently house the Eye On Malaysia Ferris wheel by the year’s end.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the state had agreed that its subsidiary Kumpulan Melaka Berhad would enter into a 40-60 joint-venture agreement with operators of the Eye On Malaysia, MST AD Suria Sdn Bhd.

“On our part, we have agreed to provide land for the project (and invest) RM12mil, with the remaining being borne by the company concerned,” he told reporters after holding prayers to mark the soft launch of the 110m Taming Sari viewing tower in Bandar Hilir yesterday.

The 60m-high Eye on Malaysia, the largest portable Ferris wheel in the world, is currently operating at Lake Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur, until the end of August.

Mohd Ali said the complex will be located on a two-hectare site next to the Malacca River and will include a water screen display and aerospace walk featuring projections to give visitors a feel of being in space.

“The Ferris wheel will become a permanent tourist landmark here and is in line with our effort to promote Malacca as an open-air theme park.

“Several other projects such as the 52-lane bowling centre and international go-kart track in Ayer Keroh are also expected to be completed this year,” he added.

He said the Eye on Malaysia would earn enough to let the operators get back their investment within four years, based on projected ticket sales.

An estimated 6.8 million tourists are expected to visit Malacca this year with the number likely to increase to eight million by 2010.

New Malacca tower to open on Monday

MALACCA: The state’s next tourist attraction, Menara Taming Sari, is expected to be open to the public on Monday.

Several setbacks in the past had caused a delay in the construction and operations of the 110m tower.

With its peak shaped like a keris, it stands tall in the middle of the busy tourist hub surrounded by heritage museums, shopping centres, and the Malacca River.

The tower was built at a total cost of RM23mil funded by Kumpulan Melaka Berhad and will be run by its subsidiary Melaka Taming Sari Berhad (MTSB).

Standing tall: The Menara Taming Sari standing tall in Malacca’s tourist hub. The unique feature is the revolving cabin ( inset) from which visitors can have a bird’s eye view of the city.

The air-conditioned viewing cabin, which can accommodate up to 80 people at a time, revolves as it rises from ground level to the top of the tower. It also revolves on its downward journey.

Among the extra services offered are kiosks, a restaurant and limousine services.

Nazary said that he expected Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam to launch the tower after the Malacca Historical City celebrations on April 15.

Thousands flock to Malacca village to celebrate 5,000-year-old festival

THOUSANDS of young and old residents and tourists flocked at Kampung Chetty in Jalan Gajah Berang, Malacca, to witness the 2008 Ponggal festival.

Other than being a harvest festival, which dates 5,000 years, it is a traditional event among Indians denoting thanksgiving to God.

Organised by the Indian Chetty community this year, a variety of activities were held to add merriment to the four-day event.

The Ponggal rice cooking, sacred cow bathing and appreciation ceremony, Indian dance presentation, traditional Indian Chetty wedding demonstration and traditional Indian folk games were among the activities enjoyed by the visitors.

K. Vimala Devi, a resident of Kampung Chetty, prepared prayer offerings such as fresh flowers, fruits, silk, kumkum and vibuthi for the festival,.

“These items will be offered to the sacred cow for its hard work during the harvest,” said the 40-year-old, adding that the Ponggal festival was also a time for the community to pray for prosperity.

Several tourists came to know about the event by chance and were immersed in the activities.

Kurt Thomas and his wife Carolyn from the United States said it was his first time they saw a traditional event like this.

“I think the culture is cool and special. I enjoyed learning from it and it opened my eyes,” said the 57-year-old Kurt, who was on his first trip to Malaysia.

Melissa May from Singapore said she felt excited witnessing the celebration as it was somewhat different from that in her country.

“Indians do celebrate Ponggal there, but they do it on a smaller and simpler scale,” said the 32-year-old.

Her friend Russell Jo Lee, 28, was amazed by the traditional dance karagatam in which the dancer made cheerful moves with the rhythmic music while balancing a big urn on his head.

“It was exciting,” exclaimed Lee.

The Ponggal festival is held during the Tamil month of Thai, which falls between January and February.

The celebrations involve boiling milk in a clay pot until it overflows, after which rice, sugar, raisins and cashew nuts are added. This is done to thank God for the bountiful harvest and for continued good produce.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam officiated at the festival.

“Festivals like this serve as an introduction of our unique ethnic characteristics to the outside world, and this tallies with tourism promotion under the Ninth Malaysian Plan,” he said.

State backing for Jonker Street CNY carnival

MALACCA: It was a relief for the Jonker Street Committee when Kota Melaka MP Wong Nai Chee succeeded in getting the local city council and Majlis Tindakan Pelancongan Melaka to support the cost of street decorations and organising the Jonker Street Chinese New Year carnival.

MBMB will foot the Jonker Street electricity bill throughout the Chinese New Year period while Majlis Tindakan Pelancongan will install panel boards and steel brackets extending from the sides of buildings along the street.

Installation of the 5m by 1m brackets will ease the job of hanging 1,500 lanterns for the carnival.

Fifteen associations and societies will decorate streets in the city, towns and villages to usher in the Year of the Rat.

More than 70 activities have been lined up by the organizing committee to keep tourists and locals occupied during the carnival.

WiFi service for all in Malacca

MALACCA: Malacca has launched a WiFi service to cover the entire state.

The Wireless Melaka project hopes to cover 70% of populated areas and deliver low cost Internet access, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

“I am very happy that wireless Internet access is now available in three locations – two at MITC (Melaka International Trade Centre) and at UiTM (Universiti Teknologi Mara) on Jalan Hang Tuah,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He said the service would be implemented in three phases at a cost of RM2.5mil, adding that the state government had asked the consortium handling the project for Internet access at parklands and subsidised access fees for students and the poor.

Wireless Melaka is a consortium formed by Melaka ICT Holdings Sdn Bhd, The Red Snapper (M) Sdn Bhd and Jaring Communications Sdn Bhd which would build and operate the service.

Red Snapper executive chairman Rais Hussin Mohamed Ariff said the first phase covering 45% of the populated areas would be ready within six months with micro-cellular base stations installed in Melaka Tengah (38), Jasin (3) and Alor Gajah (3).

Xmas songs ring out at Ayer Salak village

MALACCA: Christmas carolling has always been a tradition of the Ayer Salak village.

This year, youths in St Mary Church, organised a carolling group to visit the 50 Christian family homes in the village.

Merry time: Chung Chee Kian and family joining Santa Claus and carollers in celebration at the Ayer Salak village.

The church youth deputy president Martha Chua Swee Chin said it was a time for interaction and sharing in the spirit of Christmas.

She said the 25-member group, aged between 10 and 35, had practised singing for one week before their carolling rounds.

“We have to visit the houses on our motorcycles as the roads are narrow,” she said.

Sensible: Travelling by motorcycle is the practical way.

The carolling group, gathered at Chua’s house before starting their tour at 7.30pm, singing carols and hymns until midnight.

“We would sing four songs in either Chinese or English at the request of each household; our two Santa Clauses would also dance for them.

“The family would normally give us a donation which we channel to the church’s youth association.”

Malacca tower’s revolving top finally put in place

MALACCA: It was a slow process but the revolving top of the Taming Sari tower in Banda Hilir was finally put in place yesterday.

The RM23mil, 116m-high tower, now at its makeshift location, would be moved to its permanent location 15m away in a few days’ time.

The state’s latest tourist attraction, is expected to be opened in February.

The tower, named after Hang Tuah’s mythical kris, and built using Swiss technology, will be the first tower in the country to have a fully revolving structure.

It can accommodate up to 80 people at one time.

The revolving tower, some 100m above ground, will make a complete circle in five minutes.

There is also a restaurant, convenience store and a souvenir shop on the ground floor.

The tower was to be built near the Parameswara Jetty but work stopped when an ancient Portuguese wall was discovered at the site near the Stadthuys.

A ground-probing radar survey was undertaken to ensure that there were no historical artefacts or construction under the new site before work began in January.

Satay celup or satay steamboat only found in Malacca, are assortment of raw and semi-cooked seafood, meat and vegetables on skewers that are dunked into a boiling pot of water and eaten with sauce that is similar to the ubiquitious satay sauce but has different ingredients. Though Jalan Ong Kim Wee abounds with many satay celup shops but this place is said to be the best, as the sauce is thick and aromatic.

Melaka To Have Monorail If Investors Keen

MELAKA, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government is prepared to introduce the monorail to ease traffic congestion in the historical city if there is an investor keen to participate in the project, the State Assembly was told Tuesday.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the monorail would cover 12 kilometres from Ayer Keroh through Jalan Ong Kim Wee, Jalan Pantai, Melaka Raya, Ujong Pasir, Simpang Empat, Semabok to Melaka Sentral.

"It can be implemented at any time if an investor is interested in the project," he said when replying to a question from Datuk Chong Tam On (BN-Bemban).

Mohd Ali said a local company was conducting a study on the monorail.

He also said that the state government has sent a proposal to the federal government to extend the railway commuter service from Seremban to Melaka city or from Tampin to Melaka city.

Very nice guesthouse in a beautiful Melaka building dating from 1918. There are quite a few stairs to climb to the attic, where the big budget room is. There aren't any bunks here so no waking up in the middle of the night when you're bunk buddy decides to go to the toilet or anything. Breakfast is included and quite nice. The whole place has a very friendly atmosphere and is located close to the town centre.

There is a dipping pool and nice architecture both inside and outside the building.

Genting founder dies

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, founder and honorary life president of Genting Group, passed away at 11.20am Tuesday at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre.

The tycoon, who turned 90 in April this year, was renowned for his vision in transforming Genting Highlands from an unexplored hilltop to one of the world's most successful casino resorts.

The fifth child in a family of seven children, Lim migrated from China's Fujian province in 1937 at the age of 19 with only a small suitcase and US$175.

The idea of a hill resort was chanced upon by Lim amidst the crisp air of Cameron Highlands in 1964. Lim was then working on a hydro-electric power project at the popular hill resort, patronised mostly by British colonials seeking cool refuge from the tropical heat, when he foresaw a prosperous Malaysia of the future desiring a cool mountain holiday resort within the reach of all Malaysians.

To date, Genting Highlands Resort has five hotels and two apartment blocks at the hilltop and Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort.

The company, founded in 1965, has since expanded and diversified from its initial hotel and resort activities to plantations, properties, paper manufacturing, power generation, oil and gas, electronic commerce and information technology development under Genting Group.

According to Forbes Asia, the Genting Group founder was third richest in the country with a net worth of US$4.3bil (RM14.6bil).

Lim is survived by wife Puan Sri Lee Kim Hua, and their six children and 19 grandchildren.

Melaka International Regatta At Pantai Kelebang From Nov 8-13

The Melaka government's inaugural Melaka International Regatta 2007 will be staged at Pantai Kelebang, about 13km from here, for six days from November 8.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the regatta organised in collaboration with the Youth and Sports Ministry is a continuation of the Melaka River Festival that will be held from November 1 to 8.

Speaking at a press conference here today, he said it would be the fourth biggest regatta in the country after Raja Muda International Regatta, Royal Langkawi International Regatta and the Monsoon Cup.

"It will have jet ski shows and workshops, F3000 powerboat racing and optimist/laser class sailing apart from night time "para sailing", which will be a first in Asia," he said, adding that the state planned to make it an annual event.

Some 200 participants from Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Australia and China are due to take part in it.

"Rasa Sayange" A Popular Song Among Melaka Portuguese Community

"Rasa Sayange" is not only sung by the Malays bur is also very popular among the Portuguese in Malaysia, and is a favourite during festivals at the Portuguese settlement in Ujong Pasir here.

The head of the Portuguese traditional music group at the settlement, Manuel Lazaroo said the song handed down by their great-grandparents.

"The word "nona" in the lyrics of the "Rasa Sayange" song in Portuguese means a young lady or an unmarried woman," he told Bernama here today.

He said this in reaction to allegations by some quarters in Indonesia that Malaysia had "stolen" the song and made it a jingle for the country's promotion Visit Malaysia Year and Malaysia Truly Asia programmes.

The Portuguese first arrived in Melaka in 1511. There are currently about 1,200 Portuguese staying in 118 houses in Ujong Pasir.

Lazaroo, 66, however, said he could not say from which country the song originated or who composed the "Rasa Sayange" but that it had been sung since the time of his forefathers.

"I was taught to sing the song since I was a small boy and so were the other children," he added.

Lazaroo, who is the ninth generation in the settlement, said the "Rasa Sayange" could be regarded a song of the Malay archipelago.

Meanwhile, the settlement's head, Peter Thomas Gomes, 50, said the Portuguese community liked to sing the song because it exulted joy and merriment.

"The song is popular among the Portuguese and also other communities. I was taught the song when I was still in school," he added.

Called Cincaluk, it's made from tiny shrimp left to rot in salt and rice for weeks on end till it turns a pinky brown colour. The smell, needless to say, stinks like cheese but it's helluva delicious!
What To Buy: For us Peranankans ( Straits Born Chinese ) , no dish is ever complete with this stinky, salty shrimp sauce. Like the Thais with their ubiquitous fish sauce, we use it for practically everything, as a dip for barbequed fish, a sauce for beef noodles and even as seasoning for fried chicken. If you're keen, buy a bottle of the sauce from the famous Tan Kim Hock store in Melaka and try this simple but delicious recipe. Bon Appétit !

Bpacker's Cincaluk Chicken

Ingredients
1)A couple of chicken thighs
2)A salty marinade consisting of 1 tbsp sugar +2.5 tbsp cincaluk +1 tbsp lime juice
3)Herb seasoning consisting of 1 sliced onion+chopped garlic + 2 batttered stalks of lemon grass
4)2 tbsp olive oil
5) 1/2 tbsp dark soya sauce, for colour

->Chop the chicken thighs into bite-sized pieces and dunk them in the salty marinade for 15–20 minutes.

-> While your chicken marinades, heat the oil in a wok till it sizzles like enrique iglesias. Fry the herb mixture next. Add the marinated chicken next and fry until it's nice and fragrant . Add a little water and soya sauce and continue to fry until chicken is cooked.

First Chinese Bible from Malacca

The 200th anniversary of the arrival in China of the first Protestant missionary, Robert Morrison, who contributed much to western knowledge of Chinese, is being marked by a display in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.

Robert Morrison (1782–1834, right in photo), from Northumbria in northern England, arrived in the port of Canton on 7 September 1807, commissioned by the new London Missionary Society first to learn Chinese, and then to make a Chinese translation of the Bible.

Despite Qing law preventing foreigners from learning Chinese, the East India Company policy excluding missionaries, and opposition from Portuguese Catholics who were already working in the country, Morrison mastered the language with help from faithful Chinese assistants. In 1809 he became official interpreter for the East India Company alongside his mentor, Sir George Staunton (1781–1859), the only other Englishman who knew Chinese at the time. Though often critical of the Company and of British government policy (especially its attitude towards the opium trade), Morrison was for 25 years central to Sino-British relations.

Morrison saw few results from his missionary endeavours. However, he completed a Chinese Bible (with William Milne) in November 1819, founded the Anglo-Chinese College in Malacca, Java, in 1818 (the basis of the later University of Hong Kong), and published the first Chinese–English dictionary in 1823. Morrison died in Canton on 1 August 1834 and was buried in the Old Protestant Cemetery in Macao.

The display in the Bodleian Library Exhibition Room includes Morrison’s Chinese New Testament (published in separate parts), his Chinese-English Dictionary, and one of the many tracts (on theological or social topics) which he printed and distributed.

Robert Morrison: pioneer of Chinese Protestantism and British sinology, a display in the Bodleian Library, continues until 11 August 2007. Open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm, Saturday 9 am-4.30 pm. New interchange and road cuts travel time

MALACCA: The completion of the RM44.9mil interchange and road in Ayer Keroh would enable faster travel to the soon-to-be opened Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and Kolej Yayasan Saad.

Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said it would cut the travelling time from 10 minutes previously to two minutes.

Mark of progress: Mohd Ali cutting a ribbon to mark the launching of the RM44.9mil interchange in Ayer Keroh recently.

“The interchange will make it easier for students of the two institutes to travel to town and access the nearby recreational places,” he said.

The Federal Government funded the construction of the interchange and the road.

Mohd Ali said the soon-to-be opened UTeM is expected to have around 6,000 students and would complement the 3,000 student population in Kolej Yayasan Saad.

He hoped the surrounding areas leading to the college would be further developed, with the opening of the interchange.

“With ample space, good road access and being only five minutes away from the Ayer Keroh toll, this place has all the signs of becoming a new development area in the future,” he said.

He also urged the Public Works Department to cancel tenders to contractors who were slow and did not meet deadlines set on road and bridge projects.

He urged the people to call him or their state assemblymen to complain of shoddy work by contractors.

One-stop centres for investors in Malacca

MALACCA: Malacca will set up one-stop centres in industrial estates to cater to the needs of investors.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the centres would have clinics, restaurants and courier and security offices.

Speaking to reporters after visiting Panasonic Electronic Devices Malaysia Sdn Bhd in Batu Berendam, he said the concept was similar to those in the United States, Japan and South Korea.

“The state economic development corporation will set up the centres in an area close to the factories in the industrial estates.

“We are also planning to set up an international school in the state to attract Japanese investors to bring along their families.

“At present, most Japanese chief executives and senior management staff stay alone in Malacca and put up their families in Kuala Lumpur.

“We want to reverse this trend and entice them to bring their families over to Malacca,” he added.

Mohd Ali said a committee comprising state government officials and senior foreign executives would be set up to discuss the curriculum for the international school.

He said that under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, the Federal Government had allocated RM30mil for infrastructure development in the state's industrial estates.

“We will use RM3mil to put up streetlights, repair drains and roads and plant trees in the Batu Berendam industrial estate,” he added.

Mohd Ali said the state would also brief foreign expatriates on the Malaysia My Second Home campaign.

With effect from 1 October 1998, all travellers are required to fill in the Travellers Declaration Form (TDF) on arrival/departure. Residents and Non-Residents are allowed to bring in not more than RM1,000 in cash and an unlimited amount of foreign currency.Residents leaving Malaysia can take out up to RM1,000 in cash and foreign notes including travellers cheques not more than the equivalent of RM10,000 on departure. Non Residents are only allowed to take out amounts less than or equivalent to the sums they have declared upon entry.

The new measure is the result of Bank Negara Malaysia's Exchange Control Measure's Implementation Plan to regain monetary independence in the current world economic environment and to stabilise the country's economy.

A Resident means:-

a citizen of Malaysia, including a person who has obtained permanent resident status outside Malaysia but is residing in Malaysia.
a non-citizen of Malaysia who has obtained permanent resident status in Malaysia and is residing permanently in Malaysia.

A "Non Resident" means any person other than a resident.

Note: A citizen of Malaysia , who has obtained permanent resident status outside Malaysia and is residing outside Malaysia is a "non-resident".

Malacca hands out dodol to 300 lucky visitors

MALACCA: It was literally a sweet experience for tourists visiting the Stadhuys here recently when they were greeted and given small packs of dodol – a sweet chewy candy synonymous with Malacca.

Some 300 lucky tourists received the tasty snack handed out by Tourism, Culture and Heritage Committee deputy chairman Datuk Chua Peng Song.

Singaporean Thomas Low, 41, said dodol would always remind him of the country’s multi-racial community.

“The sweet was one of the first cakes I tasted when I visited Malacca for the first time many years ago. I still remember its delicate taste and aroma.”

Low, who was in town sightseeing, said the dodol would always remind him of the historical state.

Abdul Rahmet, 41, a tourist from Saudi Arabia, said the dodol was an excellent gift to remind tourists of Malacca, its people and culture.

“Like Malacca, dodol has this charm that evokes the senses.”

Chua said that dodol had always left a memorable impression on visitors to Malacca, and as such, hoped the little gifts would go a long way in promoting the state as a tourist destination.

He said some three million tourists had visited Malacca this year.

The state expected another three million tourists, especially from the Middle East and Europe, to visit the state by year end, he added.

Malacca captivates artists

MALACCA not only has the charm to lure tourists to its historical sites, but also has mesmerised non-Malaccan artists to live here and call the town their home.

Over the years, it has captured more than a dozen artists, local and from abroad, to live and work here, creating their paintings, wood carvings, clay vases and various other forms of artwork.

At home: Tham uses water colour to paint at the back of his gallery in Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock.

One such artist is Tham Siew Inn, 61, from Klang. He came to Malacca at the end of 2002.

Having sold his Klang home, he now lives, works and sells his painting from an old pre-war shophouse in Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, with his wife and two sons.

Tham, who uses watercolour, ink acrylic and a combination of both mediums for his artwork, can be seen walking around the historical city with his sketchbook.

“I sketch whenever I get an idea. I then improve the sketches in my paintings later,” he said.

Home studio: Low uses oil as a medium in his artwork. He also favours pastel and acrylic.

Tham said, although Kuala Lumpur offered a lot of art galleries and people were willing to pay big money for his artwork, the city was not conducive for creative work.

“But Malacca, which is much quieter, peaceful, relaxed and historical, is a good place to live and work for creative people.”

Like Tham, many other artists who have settled here find the town has similar attractions.

One of the artists who moved from Johor Baru to Malacca early on in 1988 is wood sculptor Chong Choon Kim.

Chong, who spent four years learning art in Paris prior to settling down in Malacca, carves wood at his home-cum-studio at Jalan Kampung Kuli.

His work is not only artistic but can be used as furniture.

Functional: Some wood sculpture created by Chong, which can be used at homes as furniture.

Chong, who has held exhibitions in France, Japan and South Korea, likes the idea of showing his skills to tourists visiting the state.

Negri Sembilan-born Leong Chee Siong, 44 , from Ladang Geddes, settled in Malacca with his wife and two young children after he and his brother bought an old shophouse in Jalan Tukang Emas.

“The shophouse is my home. It is also my working place from where I sell my clay products like vases and lamps.

He said he preferred to live in Malacca where the cost of living is much lower when compared to Kuala Lumpur.

Singaporean artist Low Hai Hong, 66, fell in love with Malacca after visiting the state on a number of occasions.

He rented an old pre-war shophouse as his studio in Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock in 2003 and juggles his time between Singapore and Malacca regularly.

“You cannot find such place in Singapore any more. I like it here,” he said.

From town, take the road from Ujong Pasir to Padang Temu. At the end of Padang Temu, turn right and follow the road for the next few kilometres. There is a big signboard just before the turning into the jetty (turn right in front of Esso petrol kiosk). This place consists of a row of shops located next to the jetty to Pulau Besar. Choose any one that catches your fancy. Make your selectin from various kinds of local fish, shellfish, crab, squid and prawn and decide how you want them cooked - apart from shellfish that is fried with chili paste, most seafood and simply grilled over open charcoal. Grilled otak-otak and nasi lemak is alse available here.

Just a short walk from the Renaissance hotel, you won't miss the stricking reed and yellow temple facade. Crab dishes is popular here.

Opens 2-6pm. Closes on Fridays.
The plump and luscious kuih keria, a local dough nut made of potato and flour that is deep fried and punged in hot melted palm sugar for a caramelized effect is especially good here. You can also try out the kuih rengas, fried bananas and fried sweet potatoes.

Putu Piring
252, Jalan Tenkera (next to the Sports Toto shop). Opens 7.30-11pm. Closes on Sundays
The putu piring here is absolutely the best. White as cotton and just as fluffy, this Sri Lankan desert is made of rice flour, grated coconut and palm sugar.

Satay celup or "satay steamboat" only found in Malacca, are assortment of raw and semi-cooked seafood, meat and vegetables on skewers that are dunked into a boiling pot of water and eaten with sauce that is similar to the ubiquitious satay sauce but has different ingredients. Though Jalan Ong Kim Wee abounds with many satay celup shops but this place is said to be the best, as the sauce is thick and aromatic.

Hainanese Pork Satay
Jonker Street Satay/ Sun May Hiong Satay House, 135, Jalan Hang Jebat(Jonker St). Opens 11am-6pm(8pm on Saturdays). Close alternate Tuesdays.
This famous satay of old Jonker Street offers a selection of pork, chicken, liver and intestine on skewer, with the usual side accompaniment of ketupat rice, sliced onions and cucumber. This aromatic meat has a crisp, slightly burnt edge served with a tangy, sweet and spicy concoction of crushed peanuts, aromatic roots, spices, shredded pineapple and star fruit.

Malay Satay
Ngah Satay(opposite the three-storey flats in Bukit Baru). Opens 6-10.30pm. Close 2nd & 4th Mondays of the month. For halal Malay-style satay, this is the place to go. This satay is well marinated that it is good without its sauce.

PORTUGUESE
San Pedro Restaurant, 4, D'Aranjo Road, Portuguese Settlement, Ujong Pasir.Opens 5-1.30p, daily. This place is the first and oldest Portuguese restaurant that offers home-stle Portuguese fare. Make your choices from the small menu such as the toned-down Devil Curry, Portuguese-style Baked Fish in spice paste and squid fritters.

DMG Cafe (formerly known as Margaret's Kitchen), No. 346, Taman Melaka Raya 3. Opens 8.30am-5pm. Closes on Saturdays.

This little Portuguese eatery has a small menu but food is freshly prepared and appetizing. Must-tries include Devil Curry, Beef Semur, Ayam Buah Keluak and Assam Fish Curry. On ala-carte, Portuguese laksa is highly recommended. The chicken pie is creamy and really yummy.

NYONYA

One of the many nyonya restaurants in town, this place provides home cooked dishes such as Pongteh, Ayam buah keluak Masak Assam, Geram Asam and Itik Tim. You can alse try egg with cincalok, stamed ladies fingers with sambal belacan and otak-otak.

The concoction consist of noodles, bean curd, potatoes, boiled egg and crunch fritters, onion crisps, raw cucumber and yam bean. Don't forget to eat it the Malaccan way - with a dash of vinegar and kicap manis.

Rice
Hainanese Chicken Rice Balls
This is a Malaccan specialty. Rice boiled in chicken stock and some chicken oil and salt, flavoured with ginger, garlic and shallot and make into rice balls then served with boiled chicken pieces and garnished with cucumber and spring onion, and chilli sauce.

BBQ Pork Rice
Charcoal roasted meat that is golden-crusted, crispy, tender and juicy, tasting of sticky sweet caramel, aromatic and full of flavour. Served with white rice and side dishes such as kangkung, tafu, egg, dried meat and Chinese sausages.

Melaka Zoo

The Melaka Zoo is one of the star attractions in the Ayer Keroh area following its strategic location along Lebuh Ayer Keroh, the main road linking the State with the North-South Expressway.

Set in a beautifully landscaped area, the Melaka Zoo is considered as one of the oldest zoos in Malaysia and is home to some of the endangered species of animals in the world. Among some of the rare animals to be found here include the Red Panda, which is strikingly different from the giant pandas of China.

Apart from viewing the animals from outside the enclosure, visitors can also seek the thrills of riding an elephant or horse, which is a favourite among the young visitors to the zoo.

Another attraction at the zoo is its 1.5 hectare mini-safari where visitors can walk along a raised platform viewing some of the animals from close range. To date, there are some 80 animals from 16 species roaming freely on the beautifully landscaped safari. Among some of the animals include impalas, springboks, zebras, deers, emus and storks. Developed by the National Parks and Wildlife Department, the RM7.2 million safari was opened to the public in November 2000.

Tanjung Tuan Recreational Forest is located in the administrative area of Alor Gajah Municipal Council (MPAG) and is bordered with Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan. It is about 20 minutes by bus from Melaka Town. The beach is a newly established recreational area for the whole family.

Various activities can be done here such as picnicking, boat riding, kite flying and swimming (at own risk). There are services like horse riding but it is chargeable.

Every morning, residence from the vicinity come to the beach to catch 'geragau shrimp' (a very tiny shrimp), which is in abundance from August to October. This activity is seasonal according to the monsoon wind.

'Geragau' shrimp is very popular in Melaka. They are made into 'belacan' (shrimp paste) and 'cencaluk' (shrimp sauce).

Every Sunday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, there is a free "Dondang Sayang" performance.

There is a lot of food and fruits stall along the beach. This beach promises serenity and tranquility to relieve stress after a hard week of work.

A' Famosa Water World

Especially designed for family recreation, this 8-hectare theme park is fully equipped with international-standard facilities. Thrill seekers can check out the high-speed water slides and water scooters.

For the youngsters, there is the 'Arabian Village', a brightly-coloured playground inspired by Moorish architecture with its onion-shaped domes and minarets. There's hours of fun as they climb up the steps, go through water tunnels or slide down water tubes and slides into the pool below.

The 359-hectare Ayer Keroh Recreational Forest was opened on April 17, 1984 and offers visitors peace and tranquility within its cool green surroundings.

Recreational facilities include the Prehistoric Garden, the Storyland, children's playgrounds, the Orang Asli (Aborigines) Park, Deer Park, suspension bridge, observation towers, picnic spots and refreshment kiosks.

Joggers will love this place with its three jogging tracks and a par course; and for trekkers, there are many well-marked trails throughout the forest.

Many of the trees are labelled to facilitate identification; birds and insects can be spotted from the many observation towers and tree houses scattered throughout the forest.

There is also a 10-hectare camping ground with basic facilities like water and electricity, barbecue pits, special areas for campfires and scout jamborees, and a par course.

Campers are charged RM10 per day for a group of 10; for groups of less than 10, the fee is only RM5 per day.

If you're looking for more comfortable accommodation, there are cabins equipped with kitchenette at RM30 per night. There are also huts at only RM5 per night, but you have to bring your own gear.

Dondang Sayang were traditionally sung for centuries and are still popular as a mode of entertainment. Pantuns or quatrains sung in Dondang Sayang is unique and unlike any other performing arts. Pantuns are in reality quatrains in which the first and the third, second and fourth lines rhyme and often possess a assonance. The singers take turns to match and rebut each other's pantuns. The versatile singers with their spontaneous and impromptu cajoles and rebuttals sometimes get carried away into the wee hours of the morning.

The musical instruments that accompanied the Dondang Sayang consists of a violin, rebana and gong and sometimes the accordion too.

The origin fo Dondang Sayang is said to be from Malacca. The Dondang Sayang is not only popular among the Malays but is also indulged by the Babas and Nyonyas, Chittys and Portuguese- Eurasians of Malacca which became the popular traditional song and music of Malacca. In some Dondang Sayang performances, men and women dance to the music.

The small state,formerly Malacca,is one of the more interesting states in Malaysia. In the 15th century it was the largest port in South-East Asia, though its importance has long since declined. Its history is riveting and the town has fascinating examples of Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese and Islamic architecture throughout its rambling streets.

Melaka town is small and easy to negotiate on foot, bicycle or trishaw. The most interesting parts are near the river and along the original waterfront. Here, particularly around the Dutch built, town hall where you will find a number of churches and the Culture Museum. On the opposite river bank, in what has become, Chinatown there are more interesting architectural landmarks worth visiting. Boat trips down the river make it possible to view the lifestyles of the people of the area and see more historic architecture en-route.

Melaka's beaches may not be what most would imagine to be a tropical paradise setting but there are a few close by worth visiting. The islands in the area are popular destinations for holidaymakers and weekenders. Hiring a boat or going on a tour is a worthwhile way to see the are. Pulau Besar has good beaches although the sea is not clean. the jungle walks on the island, though are good. The islands have accommodation, as does Melaka itself. In Melaka hotels can be found both in the town and in the resort areas further out of town.

There is so much to see and do in the area that Melaka makes a worthwhile stop-over for the traveler with a camera or sketchbook in hand or time to spare and an interest in history.

Malacca traders praised

MALACCA: Prices of controlled items in the state has not increased, State Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Department Deputy Chief Enforcement Off-icer Abdul Halim Abdul Karim said.

He said his officers had been monitoring the prices of chicken and other food items and found that traders were following the ministry’s price lists.

“Up to now, my enforcement officers have not found any trader selling poultry above the controlled price in the state,” he said.

The retail ceiling price for standard chicken remains at RM6 per kg and super chicken at RM6.70. The wholesale price for standard chicken and super chicken are RM5.40 and RM6 respectively.

However Abdul Halim said that many traders had complained that the chicken price set by the Government was too low.

“I told them that the supplier price was enough for them to make a profit,” he told reporters after conducting surprise checks at the Melaka Sentral market recently.

A dozen officers from his department took part in the operation to check the prices of all controlled goods in the market and did not find anyone flaunting the law. Similar spot-checks were also conducted in markets at Alor Gajah, Merlimau, Masjid Tanah and Pulau Sebang.

Abdul Halim also commended the positive attitude of some traders who were selling their items below the controlled price.

“Red chillis under the controlled price list is RM8 per kilo, but some traders were selling it at RM6 per kilo because they still could make a profit without being greedy,” he said, adding that surprise checks would be stepped up near Hari Raya.

He also offered some words of advise to consumers for the coming festive month.

“Compare prices in other places before making a purchase, don’t overspend and don’t indulge in panic buying because there is sufficient stock of food items.”

ACCESS TO MELAKA

By Air
Malaysia Airlines and other airlines operate daily flights into Kuala Lumpur and from there it's a quick journey to Melaka on the highway.

By Road
On the PLUS highway, the journey to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur is about 2 hours, and from Singapore about 3 hours.

Bus
The are buses every hour plying North, South & East of Peninsular Malaysia.

Taxi
Taxis are easily obtainable and fares depend on the distance within Melaka.

Car Rental
cars can be rented easily with rates between RM160 and RM200 per day depending on the type of vehicle. Rentals can be arranged at the hotel.

Rail Travel
Melaka does not have a train station, but visitors wishing to travel by train do so by going to the nearest station at Tampin which is just 38km north of Melaka. Tourists are advised to check the Railway offices, for schedules and fares at the following places:

There are good telephone communications throughout Melaka town with phone-booths operated by different companies which either accept coins or phonecards. International calls can be direct-dialled from private phones, some public phone-booths using a phone card and Telekom offices. The access code for making international calls from Malaysia is 00. For telephone directory information, dial 103 for domestic and 108 for international.

TIPPING
A service charge of 10% and a government tax of 5% are added to bills in all hotels and tourist class restaurants. Tipping is not mandatory.

WORKING WEEK
The working week for Governement departments is from Monday to Saturday with Sunday being a public holiday. However, most of the food markets, businesses and commercial enterprises are open for business on Sundays, except on public holidays when most shops open for half the day.

BANKS
Money can be changed at most hotels, banks and the airport. Major banks and moneychangers are located in Melaka, with banks being from 9.30am to 3.30pm from Monday to Friday and from 9.30am to 12.00 noon on Saturday.

CURRENCY
Malaysia currency is in Ringgit (RM) and sen. Most establishments accept major travellers' cheques and credit cards. The exchange rate for US Dollars is fixed at RM3.80 = US$1.00.

CUSTOMS
There is no duty-free allowance for visitors arriving in Melaka from elsewhere in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak or Singapore. Weapons and walkie-talkies are prohibited, while possession of narcotics and other illegal drugs carries the death sentence. Firearms are subject to licensing.

ANTI-DRUG LAW
Visitors to Malaysia are advised that the trafficking of drugs in the country is an offence punishable by the death penalty.

ELECTRICITY
Malaysian electricity voltage is on a 240 volt 50 Hz system.

HEALTH
The only vaccinattion requirements are yellow fever for those from infected areas. Cholera, smallpox and malaria have largely been eliminated. Those who are staying in remote villages are advised to take malaria prophylactics, commencing the coursei nadvance of arrival in Malaysia.

IMMIGRATION
Citizens from the following countries are required to have a visa to visit Malaysia: North Korea, Cuba, Vietnam and the People's Republic of China. Nationals other than those stated are allowed to enter Malaysia without a visa for a visit not exceeding one month. However, it is recommended that visa enquiries are made at the Malaysian embassy or Malaysian consulate closest to you, as regulations are subject to change.

Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker Street)

Jonker Walk is well known for its art galleries, antique shops and traders, among them goldsmiths, watch repairers, clog makers and beaded shoemakers, blacksmiths, rattan and bamboo weavers, Chinese traditional medicine merchants and food outlets.

The area has the reputation for supplying authentic antiques and objects d'arts dating back to the early fifties when Malaysians joined the urge to shop for memorabilia of the past. Two well known pioneer antique dealers in Melaka were T.K. Kutty and Hj Abu Bakar. Worth a visit are the antique and second hand shops found at Nos 25, 26 and 55, Jalan Hang Jebat. An enticing display of curios confronts the customer in these outlets and be it after a gentle browse or a methodical search, you may just be rewarded with authentic artefacts such as charcoal burning irons or porcelain and ceramic pieces that can date as far back as 300 years. Victorian memorabilia, furniture and clocks too can be obtained in some of these outlets.

Opening hours for different shops vary but generally from Monday to Thursday most open from 10am to 6pm, and from Friday to Sunday, many stay open until 10pm. Eateries open daily from 10am to 11pm. The street becomes a marketplace every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6pm to midnight.

Hang Tuah's Mausoleum

A fully decorated admiral of Melaka's naval forces who defended successfully, countless attacks against Melaka sovereignty from Siamese and Acehnese fleets. Hang Tuah's outstanding performance as a military officer made him a legend that has graced many a court and the history of Melaka. Hang Tuah's bravery was discovered during his adolescence when he single handedly arrested a man who had ran amuck in the village called Kampong Duyong. His valiant act caught the sultan's attention and was called to the palace and conferred the youngest knight ever to serve in the history of Melaka.

Hang Kasturi's Mausoleum

Hang Kasturi is one of the five great warrior brothers that includes Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Lekir and Hang Lekiu. The five brothers where great warriors during the reign of the Melaka Sultanate especially during the regime of Sultan Mansur Shah (1456-1477). The courage and strength of the five great warriors plus the wisdom of the Bendahara Tun Perak has helped the Melaka Sultanate to expand the Melakan empire up to as far as the Malay Archipelago. Thus, the Melakan empire gained the respects of friends and foes. In the Malay Annals (Sejarah Melaka), Hang Kasturi was set to be the traitor for accusing his brother Hang Tuah without proper investigation. Hang Tuah, who was hidden by the Prime Minister in Ulu Melaka, took revenge by killing Hang Kasturi in such a big battle for being a traitor to the Sultan. However, based on another story known by many people, Hang Jebat was the real traitor who finally died in the arm of Hang Tuah. The structure of the Hang Kasturi's mausoleum was much influenced by the art and architecture from India where there are spaces to put light around the tomb. This tomb is staggered and has medium levels, unlike other tombs which are long and said to be holly. This mausoleum has been gazetted as a historic site.

The champion of justice who died a tragic death. Hang Jebat was unceremoniously killed by Hang Tuah in a duel of honor that lasted 3 days and 3 nights. He ran amok after suffering a fatal wound from Hang Tuah's dagger 'Keris Taming Sari.' In the name of justice to avenge the sultan's hasty punishment against Hang Tuah for a crime he didn't commit, Hang Jebat was accused by Hang Tuah of 'derhaka' (contumacy).

The duel between two of Melaka's most prominent knights has left a permanent question as to the moral behind Hang Jebat's aberrant reaction against the authority and the conventions by which Hang Tuah exercised his conduct as loyal subject of the sultan.

Dutch Fort

A' Famosa

The hallmark of Melaka and perhaps the most photographed subject next to the Stadthuys. Built by the Portuguese in 1511 as a fortress it sustained severe structural damage during the Dutch Invasion. The British had set to destroy it but timely intervention by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1808 saved what remains of A' Famosa today.

St. Peter's Church

Built in 1710 during the Dutch occupation in Melaka. It is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Malaysia and it was built on a piece of land donated by a Dutch gentleman, Maryber Franz Amboer. Its facade and decor has a combination of Eastern and Western architecture. Its bells was cast in Goa in 1608.

St. Francis Xavier's Church

Built in 1849 by Reverend Farve, a Frenchman, the Gothic towered church is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier. Known as the 'Apostle of the East', St Francis Xavier is well-remembered for his missionary work spreading Catholicism to South East Asia in the 16th Century. You can view the authentic architecture and learn about the history of the church which is situated at Jalan Laksamana.

Christ Church

Standing exactly as it has always been since 1753, the church is testimony to Dutch's architectural ingenuity. Located next to the Stadhuys, its notable feature is the ceiling, whose beams, over 15m (16yd) long, were each made from a single tree. The 200-year old pews are still in evidence. Over the altar, there is a painting of the Last Supper on glazed tiles and on the floors are tombstones in Armenian script.

St. Paul's Church

Built by a Portuguese Captain by the name of Duarte Coelho, the chapel was turned by the Dutch into a burial ground for their noble dead and renamed it 'St. Paul's Church' from the the Portuguese's 'Our Lady Of The Hill'.

St. Francis Xavier was briefly enshrined in the open grave in 1553 before being shipped to Goa, India.

The Maritime Museum

The Museum is constructed after 'Flora De La Mar', the Portuguese ship that sank off the coast of Melaka in its way to Portugal. With its hull laden with invaluable treasures seized from Melaka, the ship was doomed from existence had it not for the efforts to revive its symbolic significance to Melaka's heritage. At the museum, visitor can get a closer look at Melaka from the famed Malay Sultanate of the 14th century to the Portuguese era, the Dutch era and the Bristish era. There are exhibits of foreign ships that had once called at the port of Melaka during the height of its maritime.

The Stadthuys

Built in 1650 as the official residence of Dutch Governors and Deputy Governors, the edifice is a fine example of Dutch architecture, with solid doors and louvred windows. Believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the East, the port-red theme extends to the other buildings around the Town Square and the old clock tower. Preserved in its original structure and form, it now houses the History and Ethnography Museum. On display daily are fine traditional bridal costumes and relics from Melaka's glorious past. Unlike most museums in Malaysia, which give little or no explanation, here it would take a couple of hours to reead your way through the detailed explanations of Melaka's past. Also, within the Stadthuys is the midly interesting Literature Museum, focusing on Malaysian writers.
